The Darkness Out There - The Signal Man - A comparetive study :: English Literature
The Darkness Out There - The Signal Man - A comparetive studyThe mood at the beginning of both stories could not contrast any morethan it does. The Darkness Out There has a beginning that is summeryand fresh. Whereas The Signal Man has a start that is very eerie andcreates a sentiency of fear. A factor that runs all the way through thestory. The effect that the beginning of The Darkness Out There has is thatMrs Rutters story hits the reader when they are not expecting itmaking it a lot more shocking. The mood change is massive. TheSignalman however, attempts to sustain the atmosphere from beginningto end. This makes the overall story more eerie by gripping the readerso that they want to read on to discover what happens later on.Historically the two texts are set in very different periods. WithThe Signalman being set in the Victorian era and The Darkness OutThere being set around the 1970s. We can tell this because of manyfactors such as the types of jobs mentioned. Signalmen worked o n earlyrailways and were flagn when electronic signalling was introducedinto railways. Also the language used in The Signalman seems to befrom around that era.Whereas Mrs Rutter is an old woman involved in the second world war,but just about of the things she mentions lead us to believe that the storyis set around the 1970s.Physically both stories are set in a similar climate to severally other. Incosy little rooms, with atmosphere, that are lonely and secluded withan open fire. Fire helps create a perception of evil as many hatfulthink of hell as fire and brimstone orientated. As I have already said, the beginnings of the two stories arecontrasted. The Signalmans beginning is eerie and weird and doesntgive out a lot of information to the reader. This means the reader isenticed to read on just to see how the story develops. The DarknessOut There, however, has a baseless and refreshing start. Leading us intoa false sense of security. But there are also similarities between the tw o. Both stories includeplaces that represent peoples fears. Packers give the axe and the Tunnel. The main theme of The Darkness Out There is that people are notnecessarily what they seem to be. Also in The Darkness Out There isthe theme of childly people growing up and realizing whom they are.Whereas the main theme in The Signalman is death and responsibilityand how it affectss people. So really they are similar in a way.

Dunleavy develops hypotheses, conducts experiments, and collects data to lay what is considered acceptable and unacceptable behavior as it applies to deception in the workplace. Ultimately, the reason for deceiving and the method in which one deceives, through either withholding (omission) or whirl (commission), directly effects the perception of coworkers credibility, power, and trustworthiness (Dunleavy, p.241). This article focuses on two different approaches of deception withholding information versus distorting information, and how that may or may non change employees perception of the deceiver (Dunleavy, p.239). Dunleavy defines deception as the conscious attempt to create or perpetuate false impressions amo ng other communicators (Dunleavy, p.240). Three hypotheses are presented in the article...
